Our History

Establishment & Growth

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania - Iringa Diocese was established in 1986 and registered on 26th September 1987. The Diocese started with 5 districts: Iringa Town, Pomerini, Idete, Ilula and Ihemi with 24 parishes, 24 pastors, 240 evangelists serving 240 preaching points, and 48,000 members.

Early Missionary Work

The first missionaries came to Itonya in Udzungwa Mountain in 1899, led by Rev. Eilhelm Neuberg from Germany (Berlin Mission). Swedish missionaries arrived in Ilula area in 1938 under Rev. Martin Nordfeldt. The Iringa-Hehe District was inaugurated in 1965.

Current Status

Today, the Diocese has grown to 8 districts, 105 parishes, 862 preaching points, and 264 pastors, serving a growing community of believers across the Iringa Region.

Current Leadership

Bishop Blaston Tuluwene Gaville

Diocesan Bishop since 25th June 2017, leading the Diocese with wisdom and spiritual guidance.

Rev. Himidi John Sagga

Assistant to the Bishop and Dean since 25th June 2017, supporting the Bishop in spiritual and administrative matters.

Mr. Nayman Asanje Chavalla

General Secretary and Accounting Officer since 2006, overseeing administrative operations and financial management.

Mr. Vincent Stanley Masanulla

Treasurer and Chief Accountant since 2015, managing the Diocese's financial resources and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
